1.October Schmoozfest Recap
So many familiar and new faces joined Cinemar at the October 19th 3rd-Friday night Schmoozfest at the expanding Digital Media Factory. The DMF is currently in fast-paced expansion mode so it's always exciting to tour the facilities as it grows and expands. Thanks to Marty, Ginny, Ray, Mitch, Brian, Chad and all the folks from DMF who directed tours and welcomed us to their space for the evening.
We started the evening with several Calls for Entry for upcoming local festivals in April and May 2008:
Angela Flynn announced Call for Submission for the 10th Annual EarthVision Environmental Film Festival will be available soon on their website and available now through Withoutabox. For more info visit http://earthvisionfest.org
The Santa Cruz Film Festival May 9 - 18,2008 will hold all screenings for the 2008 Festival at the Del Mar or the Rio theaters. They are accepting rolling submissions beginning September 1st with a "drop-deadline" in January 2008. Entry is available through Withoutabox.
Brendon Bell gave us ashort pitch and showed a trailer made byMoxie Productions on the UCSC campus.Moxie Production Groupoffers students serious about the industry trade of filmmaking a chance to experience and work in an environment that reflects professional independent filmmaking. We believe that a comprehensive education in filmmaking must include a wide variety of production experiences, both within the classroom and outside of it. Moxie works to develop projects that improve, support, and celebrate each members portfolio of work, allowing them greater opportunities when it comes to applying for graduate schools, internships, and jobs.

Chip Street gave us aStatus Report on the pre-production process onArrangements,Cinemar's Scriptwriting Contest Winner. We're right on track for our November 10-12 shooting dates. If you'd like to help out or contribute, check the website for more information, http://arrangementsmovie.com/index.shtml
Our feature presentation for the evening wasa "Work-in-Progress" screening of the feature documentary production "PROGRAMMING THE NATION"presented byJeff Warrick at Ignite Productions, LLC and Marty Collins at Digital Media Factory - about the alleged history of subliminal techniques in American advertising, politics and pop-culture.
Are we being brain-washed Or, have we all just lost our minds This fascinating journey into the subconscious seeks to determine if there's more going on beneath the surface of mass-media that we as viewers should be aware of.
A "rough-cut" of the project has recently been submitted to the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Jeff, Marty and the post-production team working on the project at DMF will shared some of the highlights of this pre-Festival version with Cinemar members. It was wonderful to get the chance to see some of this exciting local project before it goes out "into the world".

Thanks also to Cinemar member and former Director, James Duisenberg, who gave a short demonstration on lighting for independent film productions using lightweight and very portable light kits. He was good enough to set up his demo early so he could give "mini-lessons" on lighting and lighting equipment during "schmoozing" times throughout the evening. You can get a sneak peek of what James has been working on at: Photoflex Lighting School
