Hi,
Wanted to try and spread the word about this screening of our new doc.
AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY SPUTNIK MANIA SET TO MAKE HOME TOWN DEBUT IN SANTA CRUZ, CA
A sneak preview of Santa Cruz resident David Hoffman’s new feature documentary, SPUTNIK MANIA will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 27 2008 at the Rio Theatre. David Hoffman is proud to present this special screening as a benefit for Santa Cruz’s Spring Hill Academy.
Hoffman has been a documentary filmmaker for 40 years. He has more than 100 primetime television documentaries to his credit, including the six-part PBS series MAKING SENSE OF THE SIXTIES and the four-part TBS series MOON SHOT: THE INSIDE STORY OF THE APOLLO PROJECT. SPUTNIK MANIA is Hoffman’s fifth feature documentary movie.
Narrated by actor LIEV SCHREIBER, SPUTNIK MANIA tells the dramatic story of the Soviet Union's launch of the world's first satellite, and reveals the unknown story of how America reacted. Initially regarded with wonder and awe, Sputnik was soon seen as a threat and a terrifying giant step closer to nuclear war. SPUTNIK MANIA features a wealth of previously lost film from the 1950s, an extraordinary collection of high profile experts and recently declassified footage that reveal why leaders responded in ways that gripped America and the world.
THE INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY ASSOCIATION awarded SPUTNIK MANIA with its IDA ABCNEWS Award for Best Use of News Footage in a Documentary. SPUTNIK MANIA was honored at the IDA Awards Gala, which took place on December 7, 2007 in Los Angeles.
David Sheehan, Director of ABCNEWS VideoSource said: “David Hoffman is one of the true masters of documentary filmmaking, and the skill and artistry with which he uses archival imagery to construct SPUTNIK MANIA brings the story of Sputnik to life with great immediacy, drama and impact.”
Said Film Festival Reviewers:
VARIETY “A seemingly esoteric subject -- the launch of Russia's Sputnik satellite -- is exhumed and made exciting in this important slice of you-are-there documaking…”
Seattle MetroBlog “….Sputnik Mania has not a single dull moment….” …It makes American history feel alive…..”
MovieFreak.com - Sara Michelle Fetters “….I got sucked in from minute one and I stayed riveted throughout…”
FilmThreat.com “An amazing, light-speed ride through one of mankind’s most dramatic run-ins with the cosmos….. “
Filmmaker MICHAEL MOORE (Director of Fahrenheit 911, SICKO), speaking at his Traverse City Film Festival – “SPUTNIK MANIA was the sleeper documentary hit at my festival. It totally surprised me….”
Hoffman made SPUTNIK MANIA in Santa Cruz with his colleague and editor, John Vincent Barrett, who is also a local resident.
Hoffman and Barrett made the film for family audiences, especially for children over the age of 10 interested in history or concerned about America's situation in the world today.
The film will have its theatrical commercial release in New York City at the famed IFC Center on March 14, where it will run for three weeks.
David and his team will be at the Rio to speak live about the experience.
